Beyond Cappadocia’s best-known valleys and rock-cut churches lies one of Central Anatolia’s most remarkable Byzantine monuments. This Gümüşler Monastery Tour has been designed as a private full-day journey exploring Gümüşler Monastery, Kaymaklı Underground City, Niğde Museum, and the Tyana Roman Pool through a carefully planned itinerary that combines Byzantine art, early Christian heritage, archaeology, underground architecture, and Roman history.
At the heart of the experience stands the famous Smiling Virgin Mary fresco, one of the most distinctive surviving images in Byzantine art. Together with the monastery’s rock-cut chapels, monastic chambers, and remarkably preserved frescoes, it offers a quieter and more intimate perspective on Cappadocia’s Christian heritage beyond the region’s busiest visitor sites.
This itinerary is ideal for travelers interested in Byzantine art, early Christianity, archaeology, sacred architecture, and lesser-known cultural routes across Central Anatolia. It is particularly suited to guests who have already explored Cappadocia’s iconic landmarks or those seeking a more immersive historical experience through quieter archaeological and religious sites.
The itinerary follows the cultural development of southern Cappadocia and the Niğde region, connecting different civilizations that shaped Central Anatolia across successive historical periods.
The journey begins at Kaymaklı Underground City, where underground architecture reveals how communities adapted to periods of insecurity by creating one of the region’s most sophisticated subterranean settlements. It then continues to Gümüşler Monastery, where the celebrated Smiling Virgin Mary fresco, rock-cut chapels, and monastic spaces provide exceptional insight into Byzantine religious life and artistic traditions.
From there, the route visits Niğde Museum, whose archaeological collections place the region’s cultural heritage into a broader historical context, before concluding at the Tyana Roman Pool, where Roman engineering and water management demonstrate another chapter in the long history of Central Anatolia.
Rather than focusing on a single monument, the itinerary connects underground architecture, Byzantine monasticism, museum collections, and Roman heritage into one coherent cultural journey.
The Gümüşler Monastery Tour forms part of our carefully curated collection of Private Turkey Tours, where every itinerary has been developed around a distinctive destination, historical period, or cultural landscape.
As with every Adventus Travel journey, this experience combines licensed professional guides, thoughtfully planned routes, authentic historical interpretation, and the flexibility to adapt the day according to your interests, preferred pace, and seasonal conditions.
Travelers wishing to discover more about the region may continue with our Cappadocia Travel Guide, together with our guides to the Underground Cities of Cappadocia, Why Visit Cappadocia, and our in-depth guide to Gümüşler Monastery. These resources provide historical background, practical travel advice, and cultural insight before or after your journey. Travelers planning to explore additional regions can also continue with our wider collection of Private Turkey Tours.
Many of the sites included in this itinerary receive far fewer visitors than Cappadocia’s best-known attractions. Private travel allows more time to appreciate Byzantine frescoes, archaeological collections, and historical interpretation without the pace of a larger group. Throughout the journey, licensed professional guides provide deeper cultural context while adapting the experience to your interests and allowing space for thoughtful exploration.
Meet your guide at your hotel and depart toward Niğde Province, located south of Cappadocia.
The day begins at Kaymaklı Underground City, where multiple levels of tunnels, storage areas, living quarters, and communal spaces provide an introduction to Cappadocia’s underground heritage.
Continue to Gümüşler Monastery, one of the best-preserved rock-carved monastic complexes in Central Anatolia. Time is allocated to explore the monastery courtyard, chapels, and frescoes with your guide.
The route then continues to Niğde Museum, where archaeological collections help place the region’s long history into a broader historical framework.
Lunch is served at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, visit the Tyana Roman Pool, an important remnant of the ancient city of Tyana and its sophisticated water system.
Throughout the day, the itinerary combines underground architecture, Byzantine heritage, archaeological collections, and Roman engineering within a single cultural route beyond Cappadocia’s standard visitor circuit.

Fantastic tour, A mixture of sights, culture, and Cappadocian hospitality. The tour I did was customised to a 4 day tour adding elements from the range of tours offered by the company. My Tour leader Nisa or “B” as I called her was a local and it made such a difference. We were able to dodge around the crowds as she knew local shortcuts and people. We were able to meet and eat with the locals and enjoy their hospitality. We went off the beaten tourist track sometimes, and when the weather didn’t quite play nice, we adjusted accordingly. One of the greatest moments was drinking tea with one of the cavehouse owners and also having a lunch with a local couple. “B” has great suggestions for places to go to watch the sunset and also local restaurants. We went to local market and a stall keeper had me trying my haggling skills to sell him something!! It was more like visiting family and seeing the sights than going on a small tour! Our driver was efficient and safe and the van was immaculate. I will be back!
We booked a private tour with Adventus and it was hands down the highlight of our trip to Cappadocia – Right from a comfortable car , safe driver to a knowledgeable guide – It was a great experience!! Our guide, Nisa, was incredibly knowledgeable, easygoing, and made everything feel seamless. What really stood out was how they customized the entire experience to match our interests—it felt personal rather than scripted. Absolutely worth it. If you’re planning a trip, don’t miss booking with Adventus!
We had the great privilege to discover Cappadocia with the greatest guides of all times Nisa, and we had the chance to see the region through the eyes of a local who loves her region and heritage. Nisa was captivating with her great explanations, her humor and passion as they say in Turkiye “iyi ki” she was our guide

When we arrived in cappadocia, we didn’t have many plans. We had an airport pickup and just wanted to see the balloons. In spite of the balloons being cancelled both days we were there, Buket made our experience an unforgettable one. We were a group of 15, and that is like herding cats, but Buket made us feel special and taken care of like kids of her own. We have unforgettable memories and amazing photos. We did both the green line and red line tours with her. We also loved the ATV experience , that was the peak. She is very knowledgeable and we learned so much about the past and the culture of the area. I would recommend her again and again.
